License Information

To obtain a Texas License To Carry, you are required by the State to complete a 4 to 6 hour classroom session, which includes passing a written test and demonstrating your handgun proficiency at a range (in addition to the 4 to 6 hours).

Classroom

The classroom session will last between 4 and 6 hours as required by the State and will cover:

    • Basic Firearms Safety
    • Safe Handling and Storage
    • Non-Violent Dispute Resolution
    • Use of Force
    • Civil and Criminal Liability (Texas Law Shield)
    • Texas Handgun Laws
    • Firearm Retention
    • Review and Testing

You are encouraged, as you will be sitting for a while, to dress comfortably for the classroom portion of training. Just keep in mind that you will be going to the range as well and will need to adhere to the “dress code” (see below) for that portion. You will also need to bring with you to the class any State documents you have received (if you applied online before class), a State issued photo ID, and a desire to learn!

The typical class fee is $80

Fee Includes:

    • State Required Training Course
    • Application / Forms
    • Range Time/Fees
    • Targets
    • Eye & Hearing Protection (if needed)
    • Photos are no longer required

There is a $10 Discount for Current and Veteran memebers of the Armed Forces, Peace Officers, Fire Fighters, EMS/Paramedics, School Teachers, and anyone over 59!

This fee does not include the State Licensing Fee! To see a list of fees that the State charges, please click here.

You are not required to apply online before attending the class, but it is recommended to help save time both in class and in getting your license issued. I will have the forms that are required by the State, but by applying online before class, you will save time on the paperwork.

NO LIVE AMMUNITION IN THE CLASSROOM

Please leave your firearms and ammunition secured in your vehicle. If you do not feel that your vehicle can safely secure your firearm, I will have a safe storage option available in the classroom.

Shooting

The proficiency demonstration (fun at the range) portion will take about 1 to 2 hours and will be held as close as reasonable to the classroom. The proficiency demonstration will include:

You will need the following items to complete the proficiency demonstration:

    • Shoes or boots that cover the entire foot (no open-toed shoes or sandals).
    • A shirt with a conservative neckline or collar (ex. polo or high-neck t-shirt), to help protect against hot brass (hat optional, but highly recommended)
    • Handgun: Revolver or Semi-Auto (any caliber will do)
      • It no longer matters what type of handgun (semi-auto or revolver) is used to qualify. Your license will allow you to carry either type
      • Handgun must be transported in a case or bag and should be in safe working order
      • No optical enhancers or lasers will be allowed
      • One empty magazine required for semi-autos (if you have more, keep the other in your case or bag)
    • Holsters are optional
    • Ammunition:
      • Minimum 50 rounds required for testing (additional may be required for re-test)
      • Brass case ammo might be required by certain ranges (feel free to contact me if you are unsure or would like further information)

You are expected to know how to safely operate your handgun and be familiar with it. If you need additional assistance or encouragement, I can make accommodations to help you. A safe and enjoyable experience is my goal, and I will make every effort to achieve it!

If you do not have a firearm yet, but still want to take the course, loaner guns are available for $30. This price also includes the ammo you will need for one qualification attempt.

Groups

I will also hold classes for you, your friends, family, church group, co-workers, etc. If you want to setup a class, contact me, and let me know. I’ll be happy to help you with a private group class and even come to your home or office (with company approval)! There is a minimum of 7 people for private groups, and to help you, I’ll discount your fee for hosting and finding at least 5 others (I can try to help fill if you would like). I can also hold the class over two days during the week in the evening.

Private Class

If a group setting just doesn’t work for you, contact me for pricing on setting up a private class.
